Hornady’s Outfitter line is built around a straightforward premise: hunting ammunition that holds up when conditions turn against you. Whether that means crossing a river, sitting through a downpour, or pulling a round from a pack that’s been bouncing around in the backcountry for a week, the design is oriented around reliability at the moment it actually matters.

The foundation of that reliability is the case prep. Each round is loaded into a nickel-plated brass case with a sealed primer pocket and sealed case mouth, making the cartridge effectively watertight. Standard brass cases can develop corrosion when exposed to sustained moisture; the nickel plating resists that and also makes the cases easier to extract from a dirty or cold chamber. Note that Hornady has at times shipped conventional brass cases when nickel-plated stock is constrained, so the case finish may vary by production lot.

At the core of the round is the CX bullet—a monolithic copper alloy projectile with a polymer tip. Because it’s a solid construction rather than a jacketed lead design, it holds its weight through impact far more consistently than traditional cup-and-core bullets. The polymer tip initiates expansion reliably even at the lower velocities that occur at longer distances, while the grooved shank reduces bore friction and pressure. That combination makes this load a reasonable choice for deer, elk, and comparably sized game, including in jurisdictions where lead-free projectiles are required. Muzzle velocity runs at 2,800 fps with a muzzle energy of 2,611 ft-lbs, and the G1 ballistic coefficient of .418 supports a reasonably flat trajectory out to practical hunting ranges.
