Precision Hunter in .22 ARC is Hornady’s answer for hunters who want a cartridge that performs at both close and extended ranges without needing a dedicated long-range rifle platform. The 80-grain ELD-X bullet is the core reason this load exists: it is built around a dual-performance expansion model that most hunting bullets simply cannot replicate across a wide velocity window.

At close range, where impact velocities are high, the bullet drives a wide, violent wound channel while retaining roughly half to two-thirds of its weight — enough mass to punch through bone and reach vitals on medium and large game. At longer distances, where impact velocity has dropped considerably and conventional cup-and-core bullets may fail to open reliably, the Heat Shield tip takes over. That tip is made from a polymer that resists deformation from aerodynamic heating during flight, so it arrives at the target in the same geometry it left the muzzle. That consistent tip geometry is what initiates reliable expansion even at the reduced velocities of extended-range shots, where retained weight climbs to the 85–90% range and penetration deepens accordingly.

The InterLock ring — a raised band machined into the jacket that engages the lead core — prevents the jacket and core from separating prematurely under the stress of high-velocity impact. This matters most at close range when energy transfer is at its peak. The brass case is reloadable for those who handload, and the load ships 20 rounds per box.

This is a hunting load first. The same bullet construction that delivers terminal performance also produces a high ballistic coefficient, which flattens trajectory and reduces wind drift — practical benefits when the shot presents at an unknown distance in field conditions.
