The 145-grain ELD-X bullet is the reason that promise holds up. ELD-X stands for Extremely Low Drag — eXpanding, and the design reflects exactly that balance. At close range, where velocity is high, the bullet’s InterLock-style construction controls expansion so it doesn’t shed mass before it reaches vitals. At extended range, where velocity has bled off, the Heat Shield tip maintains its form rather than deforming from aerodynamic heating during flight — a real concern with conventional polymer tips at high ballistic coefficients — which keeps the G1 BC consistent and the trajectory predictable.

The Heat Shield tip matters beyond just long-range work. Conventional polymer tips can soften and deform under the heat generated at the tip during flight, which changes the ballistic coefficient partway through the bullet’s arc. Hornady addressed this by developing a tip material that holds its geometry, so the BC you calculate at the bench is the BC the bullet actually flies. For a hunter doping wind or holding over on a mule deer at distance, that consistency is the difference between a clean hit and a miss.
