Hornady’s Precision Hunter line was built around a specific problem: hunting loads have traditionally forced a choice between terminal performance at close range and aerodynamic efficiency at distance. The ELD-X bullet addresses that trade-off directly. Its Heat Shield tip is engineered to resist the aerodynamic heating that causes conventional polymer tips to deform in flight—deformation that changes the bullet’s ballistic coefficient mid-trajectory and makes long-range drop calculations unreliable. By keeping the tip geometry consistent from muzzle to target, the ELD-X maintains its rated G7 BC of .336 across the full flight path, which matters when you are dialing corrections at several hundred yards.
Terminal behavior is where the ELD-X design separates hunting from match use. At close range, the bullet is designed to expand rapidly and transfer energy quickly. At extended range, where impact velocity is lower, the construction still promotes reliable expansion rather than penciling through without significant energy transfer—a common failure mode with bullets optimized purely for low drag. The result is a single load that functions across the distance ranges realistic hunting presents, rather than requiring the hunter to carry separate loads for close timber work and open-country shots.
The .300 PRC cartridge itself was designed around heavy, high-BC projectiles from the outset. Unlike belted magnum cases, it headspaces off the shoulder, which promotes more consistent chamber alignment and contributes to shot-to-shot velocity uniformity. Brass casings and Boxer priming make the spent brass reloadable for those who work up their own loads. Each box contains 20 rounds.
