Description
The Mossberg 590 in 20 gauge is a purpose-built defensive pump gun, and this configuration is well suited to shooters who want the 590’s proven reliability in a more manageable package. The 20 gauge produces meaningfully less felt recoil than a comparable 12-gauge load, which translates directly into faster follow-up shots and broader suitability for shooters who are recoil-sensitive or still building their technique — without giving up the terminal effectiveness that makes a shotgun a serious defensive tool.
The twin action bars are the mechanical heart of why the 590 cycles so consistently under stress. A single-bar design allows the slide to cant slightly under lateral force; twin bars keep the bolt carrier tracking straight regardless of how the shooter grips or drives the action. Paired with dual extractors and a steel-to-steel lockup, the feeding and extraction path is designed to function with the kind of aggressive, imperfect manipulation that a high-stress situation actually produces. The anti-jam elevator further reduces the risk of a shell getting caught between the magazine tube and the chamber during a fast cycle.
Ghost ring sights give the shooter a much wider and faster sight picture than a conventional bead, while still allowing precise enough alignment for slug use at practical defensive distances. The rear aperture frames the front post without requiring the eye to consciously focus on a small bead — the alignment happens quickly and naturally under time pressure. The ambidextrous safety is top-mounted on the receiver, placing it where the thumb finds it naturally whether the shooter is right- or left-handed. The receiver is drilled and tapped, leaving the door open for optic mounting without modification.
