Description
The 590A1 is Mossberg’s heavy-duty workhorse, built to the tolerances demanded by military procurement and suited to anyone who puts a pump shotgun through sustained, hard use. Where the standard 590 uses an alloy trigger guard and safety housing, the 590A1 upgrades both to steel, which matters when a firearm is cycled thousands of times or subjected to rough handling in the field. The receiver itself is machined aluminum, and the barrel carries a heavy-walled profile that resists the kind of heat buildup and physical stress that a lighter tube would not.
The Parkerized finish on the barrel is a phosphate treatment that gives the metal a matte, non-reflective surface and a degree of corrosion resistance well suited to field and duty environments. Unlike blued steel, Parkerizing is also porous enough to hold oil, which helps maintain a protective film on the metal between cleanings. The ambidextrous top-tang safety sits directly under the thumb in a firing grip, allowing a shooter to disengage it without shifting hand position or breaking a cheek weld. Twin action bars eliminate the binding that can occur with a single-bar design under lateral stress or when the gun is fired from a non-vertical position. The anti-jam elevator and dual extractors support positive ejection and chambering even when running lower-pressure shells. The M-LOK forend replaces the standard smooth synthetic handguard and provides mounting surfaces for lights, slings, or other accessories without requiring a separate adapter rail.
