The gas system is engineered to run reliably across a wide range of loads without adjustment, and Mossberg designed it to tolerate substantial round counts between cleanings — a practical consideration when a training session or match can put several hundred rounds through a shotgun in a single day. Corrosion-resistant internal components reduce the maintenance burden further. The loading port is enlarged and beveled, and the elevator is elongated, both changes that make loading under time pressure more forgiving and reduce the chance of a shell catching on the way in.

The 24-inch barrel gives the shooter a longer sighting plane and, with most target and sporting loads, a modest velocity advantage over shorter barrels — a meaningful trade-off for a gun oriented toward field-style competition stages.
