Description
The Mossberg Patriot in .400 Legend is built for hunters working in jurisdictions that restrict rifle cartridges to straight-wall designs, and it does that job without asking you to give up much in the way of reach or terminal performance. The .400 Legend was developed specifically for deer-sized game at typical timber and field-edge distances, and Mossberg’s 1-in-16 twist rate is matched to stabilize the heavier, larger-diameter projectiles that cartridge is designed around — so bullet selection here is less about chasing tight groups with light pills and more about picking the right hunting load for the conditions and letting the rifle do what it was set up to do.
The 20-inch barrel threads at the muzzle, which gives you the option of running a suppressor without any additional modification to the rifle itself. Mossberg cuts the crown to a recessed match profile, which protects the rifling at the muzzle from contact damage during field handling — a practical consideration on a hunting rifle that lives in and out of a truck and a blind. The bolt is spiral-fluted, which reduces rotating mass slightly but more importantly gives mud and debris somewhere to go instead of packing between bolt body and receiver. The receiver is drilled and tapped for Weaver-style bases, and the rifle ships with those bases already in the box alongside a drop-box magazine, so you have what you need to mount an optic and get to the range without a separate hardware run. There are no iron sights, so an optic is not optional — plan accordingly. Mossberg’s LBA trigger is user-adjustable for pull weight, which matters on a hunting rifle where gloved fingers and cold conditions can make a heavier pull feel unpredictable. The synthetic stock and Cerakote Stainless finish on the barrel and receiver hold up to wet weather without the maintenance demands of blued steel.
