Description

The 3M Peltor RangeGuard is an electronic hearing protector built around a straightforward problem at the range: gunshot noise is destructive to hearing, but blocking all sound makes it harder to communicate with other shooters, hear a range officer, or stay aware of what’s happening around you. The RangeGuard addresses this by using recessed external microphones to pick up ambient sound and voices, amplifying them through the ear cups at a safe level, while cutting off electronically when an impulse loud enough to cause damage occurs. The result is that normal conversation remains audible while the cup still attenuates the sound of the shot itself to an NRR-rated level.

The low-profile cup geometry is a deliberate design choice for long-gun use. Thicker cups can interfere with cheek weld when mounting a rifle or shotgun, and the cut-outs on the RangeGuard’s cups are shaped to reduce that contact point without sacrificing the seal needed for noise attenuation. The recessed microphone placement also has a practical purpose beyond protection — keeping the microphone element set back into the housing reduces the wind noise that affects exposed mic designs, which matters more on an outdoor range than in a controlled environment.

Power comes from two AAA batteries, and a 4-hour auto-shutoff prevents the unit from draining them if left on between sessions. A single external battery door keeps access simple. A 3.5mm input jack allows connection to a radio or audio source when that’s useful. The padded, adjustable headband is designed to fit over a range of head sizes while maintaining the consistent cup seal that electronic attenuation depends on.
