The M855 projectile is a 62-grain steel-tipped, lead-core design — sometimes called the SS109 — and that construction is what sets it apart from a standard full metal jacket. The steel tip increases sectional density and reduces deformation on impact, which shifts the bullet’s behavior compared to a conventional FMJ: it transfers less energy at the moment of impact and tends to maintain its shape through intermediate barriers rather than expanding or tumbling immediately. The trade-off is that this same stability means the M855 is not optimized for rapid energy dump at short range, making it a better fit for target shooting, training, and situations where penetration consistency matters more than terminal expansion.
Brass cases and Boxer primers mean these rounds are reloadable if you keep your brass, and the non-corrosive primer formulation eliminates the cleaning urgency that older military surplus can create. At 62 grains, this bullet sits at the heavier end of common 5.56 loadings, so it benefits from a faster twist rate — a 1-in-9 or quicker barrel will stabilize it reliably. Muzzle velocity varies meaningfully by barrel length: expect figures closer to 3,100 fps from a 20-inch barrel and around 2,920 fps from a 16-inch barrel, with corresponding differences in muzzle energy.
