Sellier & Bellot’s 7×57 FMJ load is built for the shooter who wants a reliable, consistent round for range work and practice sessions without the expense or complexity of a hunting or premium match load. The 140-grain Full Metal Jacket bullet uses a standard lead core enclosed in a CuZn 10 metallic jacket — a copper-zinc alloy that resists deformation on contact with the bore and keeps the bullet profile intact through the entire flight path. Because the jacket is non-expanding by design, the bullet passes through the target without mushrooming, which is what makes this configuration appropriate for training rather than terminal performance on game.
The non-expanding construction also means the bore stays cleaner between sessions compared to some softer projectile designs — the jacket material does not shear or deposit lead along the rifling the way an exposed lead tip can. Muzzle velocity out of a 23.5-inch test barrel runs at 2,621 fps, producing roughly 2,136 ft-lb of energy at the muzzle, with a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.429 that helps the projectile hold velocity reasonably well at distance. The 7×57 cartridge has a long history in bolt-action rifles, and this load runs within standard pressure specifications, making it a practical option for working up round counts in any rifle chambered for it.
