Sellier & Bellot’s XRG Defense load is built for concealed carry and personal defense use, where compact pistols often limit bullet velocity — a tradeoff that can undermine the performance of conventional hollow points. The XRG addresses that directly through its all-copper construction, which eliminates the lead core and allows the bullet to hold together under stress in a way bonded or jacketed lead-core designs cannot guarantee across every barrier type.
The solid copper hollow point is engineered to expand into five sharp-edged petals regardless of what the bullet passes through first. Glass, drywall, fabric, and sheet metal all compress and distort conventional projectiles before they reach the target, which can seal the hollow point cavity and prevent reliable expansion. Because the XRG’s geometry and material properties don’t depend on an exposed cavity to initiate expansion, terminal performance is more consistent after intermediate barriers — a property Sellier & Bellot describes as “Barrier Blind.” Near-complete weight retention is the practical result: the bullet arrives at depth close to its original 100 grains, which sustains the wound channel through the full penetration path.
The lighter-than-typical bullet weight for 9mm also works in the shooter’s favor at the muzzle. Lower mass moving at higher velocity produces less felt recoil impulse than a heavier projectile at standard pressure, which keeps the muzzle from rising as sharply between shots. For a defensive pistol that may be fired quickly under stress, that recovery time matters. Sellier & Bellot has manufactured ammunition continuously since 1825 out of Vlašim, Czech Republic, supplying military, law enforcement, and civilian markets throughout that span. Each box contains 25 rounds.
