The 20-inch barrel sits at a practical midpoint for .308 Winchester. Going shorter than this costs measurable velocity with heavier hunting bullets; going longer adds weight and makes the rifle awkward in tight quarters. At 20 inches you retain enough barrel for the cartridge to develop close to its full potential while keeping the overall length manageable in a pack or a saddle scabbard.

The 1-in-11.25-inch twist rate is worth thinking through before you settle on a load. That rate stabilizes bullets in the mid-to-heavier end of the .308 spectrum — generally 168 to 175 grains — which aligns well with both precision long-range work and most hunting applications. Very light varmint bullets, typically under 130 grains, may not stabilize as consistently, so this is not a rifle you’d reach for if light-and-fast is your primary use case.
