A shorter barrel means lower exit velocity, and a hollow point that never reaches its designed expansion threshold is functionally a round-nose projectile at that point.
The V-Crown projectile addresses this by tuning the jacket geometry and cavity dimensions so that the expansion threshold is reached at the velocities a 3.1-inch barrel actually produces. The result is a bullet that opens predictably and retains its weight through the expansion cycle rather than shedding jacket material, which keeps the terminal wound channel consistent. Nickel-plated brass casings reduce friction during feeding and extraction, a meaningful consideration in compact guns whose shorter slides generate less cycling force than full-size frames.
