Description

Speer’s Gold Dot Short Barrel line was built specifically for compact and snub-nose revolvers, and this .357 Magnum load reflects exactly that purpose. Standard .357 Magnum defensive ammunition is developed and pressure-tested in longer barrels, which means it can leave a short barrel before the powder charge has fully burned — sacrificing velocity, increasing muzzle flash, and producing expansion behavior that may not match what the manufacturer intended. Speer engineered this load from the ground up around a 2-inch vented test barrel, tuning the propellant charge and bullet construction so the projectile arrives at the target with enough velocity to expand reliably, even from a snub-nose.

The bullet itself is built using Speer’s Uni-Cor process, in which the jacket is bonded to the lead core from the earliest stage of construction rather than being drawn around a finished core afterward. That bond is molecular rather than mechanical, which prevents the jacket and core from separating on impact — a failure mode that can otherwise cause the bullet to shed weight and lose the energy needed for adequate penetration. The result is a hollow point that expands consistently across a range of impact velocities, which matters in a short-barrel context where velocity already varies depending on barrel length and distance to target.

At the muzzle, this load produces 990 fps and 294 foot-pounds of energy from that 2-inch test barrel. Felt recoil is reduced relative to full-power .357 loads, which is a practical consideration in lightweight snub-nose frames where sharp recoil slows follow-up shots. Casing is nickel-plated brass, which resists corrosion, ejects smoothly, and is easy to inspect in low light. Each box contains 20 rounds.
