Speer designed the Gold Dot Short Barrel line specifically for compact and sub-compact handguns, where shorter barrels generate lower pressure and velocity than standard ammunition is tuned to expect. The result of that mismatch in conventional loads is sluggish or incomplete expansion — a hollow point that punches through without opening. The Short Barrel formula addresses this by optimizing the propellant charge and bullet construction for the pressure curve produced by shorter tubes, so the projectile still reaches the velocities needed to expand reliably.
The bullet itself is built around Speer’s Uni-Cor bonding process, in which the jacket and lead core are joined at the molecular level from the very start of construction rather than being crimped or locked together after the fact. That bond is what prevents core-jacket separation during penetration, which in turn preserves the bullet’s weight and structural integrity through barriers. The hollow point cavity is formed in two stages: the first cut determines the maximum expansion diameter, and the second controls the rate at which that expansion unfolds. This gives the design a predictable, calibrated opening rather than the erratic performance that comes from a single-stage cavity under variable velocity conditions.
At 820 feet per second from a 4-inch test barrel, the 230-grain projectile stays within the velocity window Speer engineered for consistent expansion and adequate penetration. The cartridge is loaded in nickel-plated brass, which resists corrosion and makes it easier to visually confirm a chamber is clear in low light. Each box contains 20 rounds. This is a purpose-built defensive load, not a range cartridge, and it is sized for the shooter who carries a compact .45 ACP platform and doesn’t want to compromise terminal performance to do it.
