Speer Gold Dot in 147-grain is a purpose-built defensive load for shooters who carry or keep a handgun for personal protection and want ammunition with a documented record in law enforcement use. The heavier-for-caliber bullet trades some muzzle velocity for reduced over-penetration risk relative to lighter 9mm loads, and the subsonic character at 985 feet per second from a four-inch barrel means it runs quietly through suppressors without needing a dedicated subsonic SKU.

The bullet is built around what Speer calls Uni-Cor bonding, a process that electrochemically joins the lead core to the jacket one atomic layer at a time rather than crimping or mechanically locking them together. That bond is what keeps the core and jacket together through intermediate barriers — clothing, glass, auto sheet metal — conditions where an unbonded bullet might shed jacket material and arrive at the target with compromised geometry. Retained mass directly supports consistent penetration depth, which is the variable defensive ammunition has to get right.

The hollow-point cavity is sized to initiate expansion across the range of velocities the bullet will realistically encounter after passing through a barrier, not just from an unobstructed shot.
