Speer’s Gold Dot Short Barrel line exists to solve a specific problem: standard defensive loads are optimized for full-size pistol barrels, and when you run them through a compact or subcompact, the shorter dwell time means the bullet may exit before pressure has done its full work on expansion. Speer engineered this load around barrels as short as 1.9 inches, tuning the propellant charge and the bullet’s construction so that reliable, consistent expansion still occurs at the lower velocities those short barrels produce.
The bullet itself is Speer’s bonded Gold Dot Hollow Point, which uses an electrochemical bonding process to fuse the jacket to the lead core. That bond keeps the two components together under the stress of expansion, which matters for penetration depth — a jacket that separates from its core early tends to shed mass and lose momentum before reaching the depth needed to stop a threat. The +P pressure rating wrings additional velocity from those short barrels where every foot per second counts, and the 124-grain bullet weight strikes a balance between manageable recoil and retained downrange energy.
Speer rates muzzle velocity at 1,150 fps from a 3.5-inch test barrel, with 364 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle. Feeding reliability in sub-compact actions was a stated design priority, so the cartridge profile is built to cycle smoothly through the tighter tolerances common in smaller pistols. This is a load genuinely suited to the guns people actually carry — pocket pistols, compact nines, and the shorter-barreled options in most carry lineups — rather than a load developed for service-length guns and then marketed downward.
