Gold Dot G2 is Speer’s second-generation duty hollow point, developed in response to a specific problem with traditional hollow-point designs: clogging. Conventional large-cavity hollow points can pack with heavy clothing, drywall, or other barrier material before reaching the target, which prevents the cavity from expanding and turns the round into something that behaves like ball ammunition. G2 addresses this by replacing the open cavity with a shallow dish filled with a compliant elastomer plug. On impact, that plug is driven inward and forces the surrounding copper into engineered internal channels, initiating expansion mechanically rather than relying on hydraulic pressure from fluid entering an open nose. The result is a more predictable expansion sequence whether the round passes through a barrier first or hits soft tissue directly.
The 230-grain projectile sits at the heavier end of the .45 ACP spectrum, and Speer’s pressure-formed, structural-plated core construction is intended to keep the jacket bonded through the expansion process, reducing the chance of core-jacket separation that can rob a bullet of its retained weight and limit penetration depth. The nickel-plated brass casing resists corrosion better than bare brass and feeds reliably through most semi-automatic platforms. This is a self-defense load developed for duty use and subsequently made available to civilian shooters — it is packaged in a 20-round box, which suits a carry rotation rather than range practice.
