Description

This barrel is built for the AR-15 shooter who wants a capable designated marksman rifle platform — something that reaches past carbine distances without the bulk of a full-length service rifle. The SPR profile is a deliberate engineering compromise: the barrel walls stay thick from the chamber through the gas block, where heat and pressure management matter most for accuracy, then taper beyond it to shed weight toward the muzzle end. That balance keeps the barrel stiffer where stiffness reduces group dispersion while avoiding the nose-heavy handling penalty of a true heavy profile.

The rifle-length gas system is a meaningful choice at this barrel length. Compared to a mid-length setup, the longer dwell time and increased distance between the gas port and the bolt carrier group reduce the velocity at which the carrier unlocks, softening the impulse felt by the shooter and giving the brass more time to release pressure before extraction begins. The result is a smoother cycling impulse and generally more forgiving behavior across a range of loads.

A 1:7 twist stabilizes longer, heavier projectiles — the match-weight bullets in the 75–77 grain range that make this kind of build worthwhile at distance. Lighter loads will still run, but the barrel’s design intent is clearly oriented toward that heavier ammunition tier.

The steel is 4150 Chrome Moly Vanadium, finished with Ballistic Advantage’s QPQ process — a salt bath nitride treatment that hardens the surface and provides corrosion resistance without adding dimensional thickness. The M4 feed ramp extension receives the same QPQ coating. The gas block journal is dimensioned to accept the OPS Inc. 12th model collar, which dictates the specific .750-inch profile at that section of the barrel. The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28.
