Description

The Bushnell Engage EDX is a roof-prism binocular built around ED Prime glass, which uses extra-low dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberration — the color fringing that appears at high-contrast edges when standard glass is pushed to 10x magnification. At that power, chromatic aberration becomes one of the more noticeable limits on image quality, so the ED designation matters more here than it would in a lower-magnification optic.

The prisms are BaK-4 glass with PC-3 phase correction coating. Phase correction addresses a shift in light wavelengths that occurs as light passes through a roof prism, and without it, contrast and resolution both suffer even when the objective glass is otherwise well-executed. The combination of ED objectives and phase-corrected prisms is what puts this binocular in a different performance tier than glass that shares only one of those features.

Bushnell’s EXO Barrier coating is applied to the exterior lens surfaces and functions as a hydrophobic and oleophobic barrier, causing water, oil, and debris to bead and roll off rather than bond to the glass. The practical benefit is that the lenses stay usable longer in wet conditions and clean up more easily when they do need wiping. The chassis is magnesium, which keeps the weight down without sacrificing structural rigidity. The binocular is nitrogen-purged and waterproof, so fogging and moisture intrusion are not concerns in field conditions. Eye cups are twist-up with detents, giving repeatable eye relief positioning for users with or without eyewear. Bushnell backs this optic with a lifetime limited warranty to the original owner.
