Description
The Colt Competition is built for USPSA and IDPA Open and Limited division shooters who want a factory pistol that arrives ready to run without immediate trips to a gunsmith. The platform is John Browning’s tilting-barrel 1911 design in single-action — meaning the hammer must be cocked before the trigger will release it, which keeps the trigger pull short and consistent, an advantage when speed and accuracy matter on a timer.
The .38 Super Auto chambering is the reason serious competitors gravitate to this configuration. The cartridge operates at higher chamber pressures than .45 ACP, which allows it to make power factor with lighter bullets and faster velocities, and its case dimensions let it feed from a 9-round single-stack magazine in a standard 1911 frame — one round more than a comparable .45 ACP build. That extra round in the magazine is meaningful when a stage penalizes reloads.
The National Match barrel is fitted to tighter-than-service specifications, which reduces barrel-to-bushing slop and supports more consistent lock-up from shot to shot. The stainless steel frame and serrated stainless slide resist corrosion over long strings of fire in varied conditions. Novak adjustable fiber optic sights let the shooter dial the rear for elevation and windage at the range rather than drifting a fixed rear blade. The beavertail grip safety protects the web of the hand during fast presentation from a holster while still engaging reliably when a full firing grip is established. Competition Blue G10 grips round out the package with a surface that maintains traction regardless of whether hands are dry or damp.
