Description
The Python has always been a shooter’s revolver first — precise enough to satisfy a target competitor, balanced enough to carry comfortably. This 3-inch variant sits between the compact and full-length configurations, giving up some sight radius compared to the 4.25-inch and 6-inch models while gaining meaningful handling advantages in a carry role or for shooters who find longer barrels awkward in confined spaces.
Colt’s current production Python is built from modern stainless steel alloys throughout, which resists corrosion without the maintenance demands of a blued finish. The rear sight has been redesigned with substantially more steel underneath it than earlier Python generations used — that added mass makes the sight platform more resistant to shifting under sustained shooting, which matters if you’re running .357 Magnum loads regularly. The adjustable rear pairs with a red ramp front, giving you a high-visibility aiming picture that reads well in variable light conditions.
The front sight is user-interchangeable, so you can swap to a different profile without a gunsmith. The barrel ends in a recessed target crown, which protects the rifling at the muzzle from contact damage and helps preserve accuracy over the life of the gun. With a 1-in-14-inch twist rate, the Python is designed around standard .357 Magnum and .38 Special bullet weights — the cylinder accepts both cartridges, which makes it practical as a training platform since .38 Special allows more volume at lower cost and reduced recoil. Walnut grips with Colt’s medallion are fitted from the factory.
