Description

The DD4 RIII S Upper Receiver Group is built around a short-barreled configuration, making it the natural choice for shooters who need a compact, maneuverable AR-15 platform—whether for home defense, patrol use, or building a dedicated pistol-format rifle. This is a complete upper assembly, meaning it arrives with the barrel, handguard, bolt carrier group, and charging handle already installed and ready to mate to a mil-spec lower.

Daniel Defense uses a carbine-length gas system on this build rather than a mid-length, which is the typical pairing for a barrel of this length. The carbine system begins the extraction cycle earlier in the pressure curve, which tends to produce a sharper, more abrupt recoil impulse compared to a mid-length on a longer barrel—something to account for when selecting buffer weight and spring rate on the lower. The Cold Hammer Forged barrel is chrome-lined, which adds measurable resistance to heat erosion during sustained fire and simplifies maintenance in wet or dirty conditions.

The 1-in-7-inch twist rate stabilizes heavier projectiles effectively—bullets in the 62- to 77-grain range will perform well here, and the twist rate also accommodates tracer ammunition. Lighter 55-grain loads remain within the stability envelope but this twist rate is optimized with heavier pulls in mind.

The 10.5-inch RIS III handguard uses M-LOK attachment points and a 6-bolt interface to the upper receiver, keeping the rail rigid without the bulk of the earlier two-piece RIS II design. The GRIP-N-RIP charging handle and M16-profile bolt carrier group are included. No sights are included, leaving optic and sight selection entirely to the builder. Finished in Flat Dark Earth Type III hard coat anodize throughout.
