Description
The Daniel Defense MK18 RIII Upper Receiver Group is built around the same short-barreled configuration that has seen sustained use in close-quarters military and law enforcement roles. It is well-suited to builders who want a compact, capable AR-platform upper that can accept a standard mil-spec lower without any fitting work.
The barrel is cold hammer forged from chrome moly vanadium steel, a process that work-hardens the bore surface and produces consistent rifling geometry across the length of the tube. A carbine-length gas system is used with a 10.3-inch barrel, which keeps the gas port closer to the muzzle than a pistol-length arrangement would. That choice produces a slower, more graduated pressure curve at the bolt carrier, which tends to soften the perceived impulse compared to pistol-length setups common on barrels of this length. The trade-off is that carbine timing on a short barrel requires attention to your buffer weight and spring rate when completing the build.
The 1-in-7-inch twist rate stabilizes heavier projectiles reliably — bullets in the 62- to 77-grain range tend to shoot well here — while still handling standard 55-grain FMJ without issue. Shooters who prefer lighter varmint-weight loads should be aware that very light, thin-jacketed bullets can be over-stabilized at this twist rate.
The RIS III 9.5-inch handguard is free-floating and attaches directly to the barrel nut rather than the upper receiver face, which removes the handguard from the barrel’s stress equation entirely. M-LOK slots and a full-length top Picatinny rail give you straightforward mounting options for lights, lasers, and optics. The upper ships without sights, so plan your optic selection before the build is complete.
