Description

The Daniel Defense RIS III is a free-floating handguard built for shooters who want the institutional durability of the SOCOM-adopted RIS II platform without carrying its weight penalty. It achieves that by replacing the RIS II’s bottom Picatinny rail section with M-LOK slots at seven positions around the handguard, so you mount only the accessories you actually need rather than dragging fixed rail segments through a course of fire or a field day. The upper rail remains a continuous, uninterrupted Mil-Spec 1913 Picatinny surface, which matters if you run a fixed optic and a backup iron sight in the same plane and can’t afford any gap or transition between them.

Attachment to the upper receiver uses Daniel Defense’s six-bolt bolt-up system, the same approach employed on the RIS II, and this version is backward compatible with RIS II hardware—it runs the same barrel nut and bolt-up plate, so builders working from an existing RIS II upper aren’t starting from scratch. The handguard body is machined from 6061-T6 aluminum with a steel barrel nut, and the fasteners are Grade 8 military-specification hardware throughout. Integrated QD swivel attachment points are built into both sides of the handguard, which keeps sling mounts flush and eliminates the lever-arm stress that a bolt-on swivel cup can apply to lighter M-LOK slots under load.

One practical note from Daniel Defense: if you’re fitting this rail to a build with a pinned and welded muzzle device, M203-style hangers will conflict with that arrangement, and Daniel Defense recommends working with a qualified gunsmith for that installation.
