Description

Federal’s Gold Medal Berger line exists for one purpose: giving precision rifle competitors and serious long-range shooters a factory load built around the same projectiles they were already handloading. The 140-grain Berger Hybrid bullet at the center of this load is the most requested projectile on the Precision Rifle Series circuit, and Federal loads it here with the same care applied to their flagship match ammunition — Gold Medal match primers, Federal brass, and propellant mixed to tight pressure and velocity windows.

The Hybrid bullet design matters because it splits the difference between a pure tangent ogive and a secant ogive. Tangent bullets seat and feed predictably and are forgiving of seating depth variation; secant designs wring out a higher ballistic coefficient but are sensitive to how far off the lands they sit. The Hybrid profile captures most of the aerodynamic advantage of the secant shape while staying tolerant enough for magazine-fed rifles without custom seating depth work. The result is a G7 BC of 0.311, which translates directly into reduced wind drift and a flatter arc at distances where fractions of an inch in point of impact start to matter.

At a muzzle velocity of 2725 fps, this load moves fast enough to keep the Hybrid’s high BC working efficiently through the transonic transition zone, extending the range at which the bullet stays predictably stable. Federal holds this ammunition to its tightest internal specifications for pressure consistency, which keeps velocity standard deviation low and shot-to-shot dispersion tighter than what most match shooters can achieve without access to a chronograph and a lot of range time with components.
