Conventional cup-and-core bullets shed lead during penetration, which shortens the wound channel and limits how much tissue damage actually occurs at depth. The all-copper construction here resists fragmentation, and Federal’s testing shows weight retention at or near 99 percent — meaning the bullet that enters the animal is essentially the bullet that stops inside it, delivering its energy along the full path rather than shedding it near the surface.

The polymer tip does two jobs simultaneously. It initiates expansion at lower impact velocities — important when shooting at extended range where the bullet has slowed considerably — and it raises the ballistic coefficient by streamlining the nose, which the boat-tail base reinforces from the other end. That combination helps the bullet hold velocity and energy downrange and reduces how much wind can push it off course. The grooves machined into the bullet’s shank reduce bearing surface contact with the bore, which helps the projectile stay stable across rifles with varying throat dimensions and twist rates rather than requiring a tightly matched setup.

At 85 grains, this load sits on the heavier end of what the .243 Winchester is commonly loaded with for big game, which is a deliberate trade-off: a heavier bullet at this caliber carries more sectional density for deeper penetration on deer-sized animals, accepting a modest reduction in raw velocity compared to lighter varmint-weight options in the same cartridge.
