Federal’s Gold Medal Berger line exists for one purpose: giving precision rifle competitors and serious long-range shooters a factory load built to the same standard they would hold handloads to. The .224 Valkyrie cartridge was designed to sustain supersonic flight well past the distances where most standard AR-platform rounds go transonic and lose stability, and this 80.5-grain loading takes full advantage of that design intent by pairing the caliber with a Berger boat-tail target bullet that has the sectional density and form factor to hold velocity efficiently at extended range.
The boat-tail geometry matters because it reduces base drag, which is the dominant drag source at the velocities this load operates. Combined with a G7 ballistic coefficient of 0.226, the bullet resists wind deflection better than shorter, lighter projectiles in the same caliber — a meaningful difference when you are calling corrections at several hundred yards. Federal loads these rounds over specially formulated propellant using Gold Medal match primers, which are designed for consistent ignition across a tight pressure window. Consistent ignition translates directly to low standard deviation in muzzle velocity, and low velocity spread is what keeps your vertical stringing small at distance.
The brass cases are Federal’s own, held to tighter dimensional tolerances than standard production ammunition. Muzzle velocity is listed at 2,925 fps from a standard test barrel, giving the bullet enough initial speed to stay well above the transonic threshold at realistic long-range target distances. Each box contains 20 rounds.
