This load, built around the Sierra MatchKing 107-grain boat-tail hollow point, is aimed at competitors and long-range target shooters who need the bullet to perform predictably past 500 yards, not just at the muzzle.

The Sierra MatchKing’s boat-tail geometry reduces base drag as the bullet transitions from powered flight to purely ballistic travel, which matters most at extended distances where small deviations compound. The 107-grain projectile carries a G1 ballistic coefficient of .547 and a G7 of .271, meaning it sheds velocity relatively slowly compared to lighter bullets in the same caliber — a meaningful advantage when you’re dialing elevation for shots beyond 400 yards. At the muzzle the bullet leaves at 3,000 feet per second, giving the shooter a reasonably flat trajectory in the mid-range bands where most match stages are set.

Federal uses Federal brass and a benchrest-grade Gold Medal primer, which is formulated for tight shot-to-shot consistency in ignition pressure. That consistency is what separates match-grade ammunition from general-purpose loads: group size at distance is largely a function of how uniform each round’s pressure curve is, and the primer is where that curve begins. A specially formulated propellant completes the stack, chosen to maintain velocity consistency across the full 20-round box and across varying temperatures.
