Description
Federal Premium Grand Slam is purpose-built for turkey hunting, and the 10-gauge 3.5-inch loading represents the top of that lineup in terms of raw payload capacity. Two ounces of copper-plated lead shot in size 5 gives you a dense column of pellets well suited to the head and neck of a gobbler at the ranges where most hunters are working.
The central engineering decision in this shell is the FLITECONTROL FLEX wad. Unlike a conventional wad that opens at the front and releases the shot charge in a relatively uncontrolled burst, FLITECONTROL FLEX opens from the rear. That rearward-petal design slows the wad’s separation from the shot string and keeps the pellets together longer, translating directly into tighter, more consistent patterns downrange. Critically, the wad is designed to function correctly through both standard and ported choke tubes — a practical consideration since ported chokes can disrupt conventional wads before they clear the muzzle, degrading the pattern.
The copper plating on the lead pellets serves two purposes: it hardens the surface to resist deformation during the violence of ignition and acceleration, and it reduces friction against the bore. Federal also packs the payload in a buffering compound that fills the voids between pellets, further cushioning them against deformation. Rounder pellets fly more predictably and hold their energy better at distance, which matters when you need consistent performance at the edge of ethical shooting range. Muzzle velocity is rated at 1,200 fps. Each box contains 10 rounds.
