Federal Premium’s Barnes TSX load in .300 Winchester Magnum is built around a single purpose: putting big game down cleanly at distances where bullet construction becomes the limiting factor. The 180-grain Barnes Triple-Shock X is a solid-copper hollow point, and that one-piece construction is the core of what makes this load behave differently from a cup-and-core bullet. Because there is no lead core to separate, the bullet retains nearly all of its weight through impact, which means the momentum driving penetration does not bleed off partway through an animal. A lead-core bullet can shed its core under hard contact with bone and lose a significant fraction of its sectional density at the worst possible moment; the TSX does not have that failure mode.

The hollow-point cavity is designed to open reliably and hold a consistent expanded diameter rather than fragmenting, which keeps tissue damage predictable. The grooves machined into the bullet’s shank reduce the bearing surface contacting the rifling, lowering pressure spikes and improving consistency across a string of shots. The ballistic coefficient of .453 gives the 180-grain projectile enough retained velocity at extended ranges to expand reliably on arrival. At the muzzle the load generates 3,502 foot-pounds of energy, and the trajectory stays flat enough through 300 yards to be practical on elk or large deer without holdover becoming a problem. Brass cases are nickel-plated, which makes feeding reliable in cold conditions and chamber extraction smooth. This is a hunting load for shooters who want construction they can trust on a once-a-year shot at a mature animal, not a range round.
