Description
Federal Speed-Shok is a steel waterfowl load built for hunters who want reliable performance without the fouling problems that plagued older non-toxic loads. The reformulated propellant burns faster and cleaner than Federal’s earlier Speed-Shok recipe, which means less carbon buildup in the action and barrel over a long day in a blind — a practical benefit when conditions are cold and wet and a thorough cleaning between hunts isn’t always realistic.
The primer is matched to that fast-burning powder to ensure consistent ignition shot to shot. In waterfowl hunting, inconsistent ignition shows up as fliers, and at the ranges where #4 steel is most useful — close-in teal and mallards in timber, for instance — a flier is a missed bird. That consistency is where the redesign matters most.
Steel shot is less dense than lead, which is why this load drives its payload to 1,550 feet per second. The higher velocity compensates for steel’s lower energy transfer at a given impact speed, making #4 an appropriate choice for ducks at moderate ranges where the smaller pellet count still delivers enough pattern density. At 1 3/8 oz of #4 steel across a 3-1/2 inch hull, this load is suited to 12-gauge guns with chambers long enough to handle magnum waterfowl loads and chokes rated for steel. Runs 25 rounds per box.
