The SST, or Super Shock Tip, uses a polymer tip seated into a lead core that is mechanically locked to the jacket. On impact, the tip drives rearward and initiates expansion across a wide range of velocities, which matters when shots at medium game like deer or hogs can happen anywhere from inside 50 yards to beyond 200. The InterLock-style cannelure keeps the core from separating as the bullet expands, so you get weight retention rather than fragmentation. The result is a bullet that still carries enough mass to penetrate after expansion — a meaningful trade-off compared to thin-jacketed varmint bullets that shed weight quickly.

The 6.5 Grendel’s cartridge geometry is well suited to the SST’s profile: the caliber carries a high sectional density relative to its bullet weight, which helps the 123-grain projectile hold velocity across distance and resist wind deflection better than heavier, blunter alternatives in other AR-compatible cartridges.
