Hornady BLACK in 6.5 Grendel is built around one purpose: delivering match-grade accuracy from the AR-15 platform without requiring a dedicated match rifle. The 123-grain ELD Match bullet uses a heat-resistant polymer tip that retains its shape under the aerodynamic heating that occurs in flight, keeping the ballistic coefficient consistent from the muzzle to the target rather than degrading as a standard polymer tip can. That consistency matters most at distance, where even small BC variations compound into meaningful point-of-impact shifts.

The G1 BC of .506 and G7 of .255 reflect a secant ogive profile optimized for long-range work. G7 figures are generally more useful when modeling flight past 300 yards because the G7 reference projectile more closely resembles a modern boat-tail bullet, so the .255 G7 number will track more accurately in ballistic calculators than the G1 equivalent. Sectional density of .252 supports good penetration relative to the bullet’s diameter, which matters if this load pulls double duty in the field as well as on paper.

Hornady loads BLACK to function reliably across the range of gas port positions and operating conditions common to AR-pattern rifles — carbine, mid-length, and rifle-length systems — rather than optimizing for a single platform. The brass case is Boxer-primed and reloadable, which makes this a reasonable choice for shooters who reload, since 6.5 Grendel brass is less commonly available than more mainstream calibers.
