Description
Hornady’s Custom Lite line exists for a specific purpose: delivering honest hunting performance out of full-size rifle cartridges while keeping recoil at a level that doesn’t discourage smaller-framed shooters, younger hunters, or anyone returning from injury or simply wanting a more comfortable day at the range. This is not a plinking load or a training substitute — it is a hunting round designed to take medium-sized game cleanly.
The 125-grain bullet weight sits lighter than typical .308 Winchester hunting loads, and that choice is deliberate. Reducing projectile mass is one of the primary levers Hornady uses to bring down both felt recoil and muzzle blast without requiring the shooter to change rifles or use a different platform. The lighter bullet exits the bore faster, but the powder charge is calibrated to work within that reduced-recoil envelope rather than simply pushing a lighter bullet at maximum pressure.
The bullet itself is Hornady’s SST — Super Shock Tip — a polymer-tipped, boat-tail design with a copper jacket over a lead core. The polymer tip serves two functions: it protects the tip during feeding and in the magazine, and it initiates expansion on impact reliably and consistently. The boat-tail geometry supports a ballistic coefficient of .305, which helps the projectile maintain velocity and resist wind deflection at hunting distances. Muzzle energy comes in at approximately 1,986 ft-lbs, which is adequate for deer-class animals at reasonable ranges. Brass casings are Boxer-primed and reloadable, so handloaders can get additional use from the spent brass. Each box contains 20 rounds.
