Hornady’s Outfitter line exists for one specific situation: hunting where the conditions work against your ammunition before you ever pull the trigger. Moisture, dust, temperature swings, and days of hard carry between shots — Outfitter is built around that reality rather than the controlled environment of a bench or a standard hunting season.

The foundation of that durability is the case. Outfitter loads use nickel-plated brass, which resists corrosion better than bare brass when rounds spend extended time in a magazine or loop exposed to weather. Note that Hornady has at times substituted standard brass cases due to material availability, so case finish may vary by production lot.

The projectile is Hornady’s CX bullet — a monolithic copper-alloy construction with a polymer tip. Because it eliminates the lead core entirely, the CX holds its weight through tissue rather than shedding it, which matters when you need the bullet to reach vitals on an elk-sized animal from a less-than-ideal angle. The polymer tip initiates expansion at the velocities you actually shoot at, not just at close-range maximums, and the grooved shank reduces bore friction that full-diameter copper solids can generate. The result is a bullet that shoots closer to lead-core pressures while still delivering the weight retention of a solid.

At 130 grains from the 6.5 PRC case, muzzle velocity runs 2,975 fps, giving the load a flat enough trajectory for the longer shots that justify bringing a cartridge of this class into the backcountry. The 20-round box count is practical rather than bulk — enough for a hunt plus confidence rounds, without the weight penalty of a larger quantity when you’re moving on foot.
