Description

Hornady’s Precision Hunter line is built around one premise: ammunition that performs as well at distance as it does up close, without requiring the shooter to carry two different loads for different situations. The .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge makes this particularly relevant — it reaches out to ranges where most hunting rounds have already given up meaningful retained energy, and the 270-grain ELD-X bullet is weighted to take full advantage of that capability against elk, moose, and other heavy-bodied game.

The ELD-X bullet uses a Heat Shield tip, which matters more than it might initially seem. Standard polymer tips deform from aerodynamic heating during flight, which changes the bullet’s profile mid-trajectory and degrades the ballistic coefficient the load was designed around. The Heat Shield tip resists that deformation, so the BC the bullet was engineered to — and the trajectory your dope is built on — stays consistent from the muzzle to the target. At conventional hunting ranges, the bullet is designed for immediate, decisive expansion. At extended range, where impact velocity is lower, the construction is intended to prevent over-expansion and maintain enough sectional density to penetrate adequately.

Muzzle velocity runs 2,800 fps, generating 4,699 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. The brass cases are reloadable and use Boxer primers, which means once-fired brass can be reconditioned and reloaded — a meaningful consideration given the per-round cost of premium .338 Lapua ammunition.
