Hornady’s Precision Hunter line was built around a specific problem: hunting ammunition that performs predictably at both close and extended distances, without requiring the shooter to carry two different loads for different shot opportunities. The 143-grain ELD-X bullet is the mechanism that solves it. At conventional ranges where impact velocity is high, the bullet expands progressively throughout penetration, with the jacket’s thick shank and InterLock ring holding core and jacket together for 50 to 60 percent weight retention. That construction matters because retained weight is what drives penetration depth on heavy game.

At ranges beyond 400 yards, where velocity has dropped, the Heat Shield tip takes over. Standard polymer tips deform from aerodynamic heating in flight, which degrades the ballistic coefficient over the course of a long trajectory. The Heat Shield is formulated to resist that deformation, so the BC the bullet leaves the muzzle with is the BC it carries downrange. At low-velocity impact, that same tip is driven rearward into the bullet to mechanically initiate expansion, producing a large mushroom with 85 to 90 percent weight retention — more than you’d see at close range, because the controlled expansion mechanism takes over from the velocity-dependent one.

Muzzle velocity comes in at 2,960 feet per second, which is the foundation for a flat trajectory out to practical hunting distances. The propellants are selected for temperature stability, meaning the load prints consistently in cold-weather conditions rather than shifting point of impact between summer load development and a November hunt. Each round is loaded to uniform powder capacity, which tightens shot-to-shot consistency and translates directly to tighter groups at distance. This is ammunition built for a shooter who scouts a field, knows the ranges, and needs the load to do exactly what the data says it will.
