Hornady’s Precision Hunter line is built around one premise: factory ammunition that performs at the level handloaders expect, for hunters who need consistent results across varying field conditions. The 162-grain ELD-X bullet is the centerpiece of that engineering. ELD-X stands for Extremely Low Drag – eXpanding, and the name reflects two competing demands that hunting bullets historically struggle to satisfy simultaneously. The bullet must fly with a high ballistic coefficient to resist wind drift and retain velocity at distance, but it must also expand reliably across a wide range of impact velocities — from close shots where velocity is high to longer shots where it has bled off considerably. Hornady addresses the aerodynamic side with a Heat Shield tip, a polymer insert made from a material that does not deform under the heat generated by air friction in flight. Standard polymer tips can melt or reshape during a long shot, altering the ogive profile and degrading the ballistic coefficient mid-flight. The Heat Shield tip holds its geometry, which keeps the published G1 BC of .613 consistent from muzzle to target. On the terminal side, the ELD-X jacket is designed to initiate expansion at lower velocities than a conventional cup-and-core bullet, while the rear InterLock band retains enough core material for deep penetration on elk-sized game. Propellant selection in Precision Hunter loads is tuned for temperature stability, meaning the point of impact shift between a cold-weather morning and a warm afternoon should be minimal — a meaningful consideration for hunters who zero in one season and hunt in another. Brass cases and Boxer primers mean spent cases are reloadable for those who want to develop a handload around the same projectile.
