Hornady’s Superformance line exists to solve a specific problem: getting more out of a bullet without changing the bullet. Rather than simply increasing charge weight and accepting the consequences, Hornady developed progressive-burning propellants that extend the pressure curve across the barrel’s length more efficiently. The result is that a 55-grain CX driven by Superformance propellant reaches velocities that conventional powder charges in the same case cannot match, without generating the excess pressure or port pressure spikes that cause function problems or accelerated wear.

The CX bullet itself is a monolithic copper-alloy design with a polymer tip. Monolithic construction means there is no lead core to separate from a jacket under high-velocity impact, so the bullet retains more of its original weight through the terminal phase. The polymer tip initiates expansion reliably at a wider range of impact velocities than a flat-nose or open-tip design would allow, which matters in cartridges like 5.56 NATO where velocity at distance can drop below the threshold that hollow points need to expand consistently. Each round is loaded in brass cases, which are reloadable for those who want to recover them.

This combination makes the load well suited to varmint hunters and predator hunters who need a non-lead option, as well as shooters in jurisdictions where lead-core projectiles are restricted in certain areas.
