Hornady’s Superformance line is built around a straightforward problem: conventional propellants reach a practical ceiling in terms of velocity, and the traditional workaround—packing more slow-burning powder into a larger case—adds recoil and muzzle blast without delivering usable energy efficiently. Superformance sidesteps that trade-off by using ultra-progressive propellants at normal charge weights, which transfers more energy to the bullet before it exits the muzzle rather than wasting it in the gas column behind the projectile. The result is a meaningful velocity gain—100 to 200 fps over conventional loads—without a corresponding increase in felt recoil or muzzle blast.

The 162-grain SST bullet is well-suited to medium and large thin-skinned game. The SST’s polymer tip initiates rapid, controlled expansion on impact while the InterLock design keeps the core and jacket together through the wound channel, preserving transferred energy where it matters. A ballistic coefficient of .550 and a sectional density of .287 help the bullet resist wind deflection and retain velocity at distance, making this load a reasonable choice for shots beyond the ranges where lighter, blunter projectiles start to shed energy noticeably. Muzzle velocity is 3,030 fps, generating 3,302 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle. Brass casings with Boxer priming make the spent brass reloadable for handloaders. The load is safe for use in semi-automatic, lever-action, and pump-action rifles, not just bolt guns.
