Hornady’s V-Match line is built around one premise: that competitive and precision long-range shooters need ammunition that behaves the same way at the muzzle as it does hundreds of yards downrange. The 174-grain ELD-VT bullet is central to that goal. ELD-VT stands for Extremely Low Drag – Varmint and Target, and the distinction matters. The tip is made from Hornady’s Heat Shield polymer, which resists aerodynamic heating during flight — a problem that causes conventional polymer tips to deform, shifting the ballistic coefficient mid-trajectory and scattering point of impact. By keeping the tip geometry consistent from shot to shot, the ELD-VT is designed to deliver a predictable, repeatable ballistic profile rather than one that changes as conditions get warmer or strings of fire get longer.

The .300 PRC cartridge gives this load a meaningful reach advantage over shorter magnums. Its case geometry and freebore are engineered to seat long, high-BC projectiles without encroaching on powder capacity — which is why a 174-grain bullet at this diameter makes sense here in a way it wouldn’t in an older case design.
