Description
The Maverick 88 Youth is built for smaller-framed shooters — younger hunters making their first seasons in the field, or adults who find full-size shotguns awkward to mount and swing. Mossberg designed it around a 12-inch length of pull, which puts the trigger in reach without stretching and lets the shooter stay on target through follow-up shots rather than fighting the gun back into position.
The 22-inch barrel shortens the overall package enough to matter when you’re moving through thick cover, and the vent rib along the top keeps heat shimmer off your sight picture while giving a natural sighting plane for swinging on moving targets. A single front bead is a deliberate choice for a field gun: it’s fast to acquire and doesn’t pull your attention away from a flushing bird the way a more complex sight system can.
The action runs twin action bars and dual extractors — the twin bars eliminate the twisting force that a single-bar design puts on the action under recoil, and the dual extractors give the hull two contact points for positive, reliable ejection even with damp or swollen hulls. The crossbolt safety sits at the trigger guard, accessible to either hand, and engages mechanically rather than relying on the action position. The 3-inch chamber handles both 2¾-inch and 3-inch loads, so ammunition selection isn’t constrained when you’re hunting different species across a season.
The Mossy Oak Treestand camo stock and forend are synthetic, which holds up to rain and temperature swings without the warping or finish damage that affects wood in hard use. A modified choke tube comes installed, a sensible middle-ground choice for upland birds and small game at typical hunting distances.
