Description
The Mossberg 590S is built for shooters who want a defensive or duty-oriented pump shotgun without being locked into a single shell length. Where a conventional 12-gauge pump cycles only 2.75″ or 3″ ammunition, the 590S is engineered to feed and eject 1.75″ minishells, standard 2.75″, and full 3″ shells interchangeably without adjustment or conversion parts. That matters in practice: minishells reduce felt recoil and increase round count, while full-size buckshot or slug loads remain available whenever the situation calls for them. The shooter can mix shell lengths in the same tube and the action handles the transition.
The tang-mounted safety sits at the rear of the receiver, directly under the thumb of either hand, making it genuinely ambidextrous rather than requiring a parts swap. That placement also keeps the top of the receiver unobstructed, which is how this variant accommodates a red-dot or similar optic — the receiver is drilled and tapped with a Shield RMSc footprint so the mount sits low and centered without a riser stack.
The front bead sight remains fully functional if you run the gun bare, giving you a simple, fast-acquisition reference for close-range work. Dual extractors and twin action bars contribute to reliable cycling under stress and reduce the likelihood of a short-stroke or extraction failure. The metal wears a matte blued finish. At 9+1 capacity, the tube is long relative to the 18.5″ barrel, which keeps the overall package compact while preserving magazine volume. This configuration suits home defense, patrol use, and range training equally well.
