Description
The 590S is Mossberg’s answer to a real gap in the pump-action market: a tubular-magazine shotgun that cycles 1¾-inch minishells, standard 2¾-inch loads, and 3-inch shells interchangeably without any manual adjustment. That flexibility matters practically — you can run low-recoil reduced-power loads for prolonged training sessions, switch to standard buckshot, and step up to 3-inch magnum shells, all from the same gun, without swapping parts or fumbling with adapters. The redesigned elevator is what makes this possible; it positions each shell correctly regardless of its length before it enters the chamber.
The 13+1 capacity, achieved in part by the ability to stack minishells efficiently in the magazine tube, makes this a serious choice for home defense or competition formats where round count matters. Twin action bars eliminate the single-bar bind that can occur under stress or awkward firing angles, and dual extractors give the bolt two points of engagement on the rim for more reliable extraction across the shell-length range the gun is designed to handle.
The receiver is drilled and tapped for optics, and the M-Lok forend lets you mount lights or other accessories without permanent modification. The ambidextrous top-tang safety sits in the same location Mossberg has used for decades — directly under the thumb of the firing hand regardless of which hand that is — so the control is where you expect it without any reconfiguration. A front bead comes standard for those who prefer a clean sight picture without a rear aperture cluttering the view. The matte blued finish on the 20-inch barrel keeps the profile subdued and functional without requiring the maintenance cadence of a polished surface.
