Description
The Mossberg Patriot in .400 Legend is built around the practical demands of deer and hog hunters who need a hard-hitting, compact bolt gun that works within restrictions on straight-walled cartridge hunting seasons across the Midwest and Northeast. The .400 Legend cartridge itself was designed to push heavy-for-caliber bullets at moderate velocities, and the 1-in-16 twist rate Mossberg selected stabilizes that bullet weight range without over-spinning lighter projectiles, giving hunters straightforward ammunition flexibility without chasing niche loads.
The 20-inch barrel keeps the rifle handy in a blind or dense cover while still allowing the cartridge to reach its useful velocity window. The barrel is threaded at 11/16″-24 TPI, so adding a suppressor or muzzle brake is a direct installation without adapters. Mossberg cuts a recessed match crown at the muzzle, which protects the critical last few inches of rifling from contact damage in the field — a detail that matters for consistency shot to shot. The spiral-fluted bolt reduces surface contact against the receiver raceway, which translates to a smoother cycling feel, particularly when hands are cold or gloved.
Mossberg’s patented LBA trigger is user-adjustable across a 2-to-7 pound pull range using the supplied tool, letting a shooter dial in a lighter, crisper break for deliberate shots without the cost of an aftermarket unit. The drop-box magazine holds four rounds and feeds from a detachable box, so reloading in the field is faster than working from an internal magazine. A Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40mm scope is included and mounted on Weaver-style bases, providing an immediate working optic without an additional purchase before the first range session.
