The Mossberg Patriot in .400 Legend is built for hunters who want a straight-walled cartridge rifle that crosses over cleanly between jurisdictions that restrict bottlenecked centerfire rounds and general deer country. .400 Legend was designed to push heavier bullets at moderate velocity, and the 1:16″ twist rate keeps that heavier projectile weight stable without over-spinning lighter loads—useful if you intend to run the same rifle through varied hunting seasons with different ammunition. The 20-inch barrel strikes a balance between packability in thick timber and enough dwell time to let the .400 Legend reach useful hunting velocities; it is not a compromise, it is a deliberate fit for the cartridge’s pressure curve.

The barrel is threaded at 11/16″-24 TPI and capped, so a suppressor or muzzle brake can be mounted without a gunsmith visit. A recessed match crown protects the rifling where it matters most—at the muzzle—reducing the chance that field handling degrades accuracy over time. The bolt features a spiral flute, which reduces surface contact and makes cycling smoother when the action is cold or fouled.
