Description
The Mossberg Patriot is a straightforward hunting and field rifle built for shooters who want a capable bolt gun without paying for features they will never use. It handles .308 Winchester and its NATO-spec equivalent equally well, making it a practical choice for deer hunters, elk hunters at moderate range, and anyone who shoots surplus or bulk military brass alongside commercial loads.
The barrel is button-rifled and free-floated, meaning the stock makes no contact along its length and cannot transmit pressure variations from a shooter’s grip into the point of impact. A recessed crown protects the muzzle’s critical rifling edges from contact damage during field carry, where a bare crown can pick up nicks that degrade accuracy over time. The one-in-ten twist rate is well matched to the standard weight range of .308 hunting bullets — roughly 150 to 180 grains — and will stabilize most factory loads without demanding premium or specialty ammunition.
The spiral-fluted bolt serves two practical purposes: the flutes reduce surface contact between the bolt body and receiver, which keeps cycling smooth when fouling or debris are present, and the knurled handle gives a secure grip for fast manipulation without requiring an oversized tactical knob. The drop-box magazine design lets a shooter unload by releasing the magazine rather than cycling each round individually through the action, which is a genuine convenience in the field.
The LBA trigger is user-adjustable from two to seven pounds without a gunsmith, which allows the rifle to be tuned for a light, crisp break suitable for deliberate bench or stand shooting, or backed off to a heavier pull for conditions where safety margin matters more than trigger feel. No iron sights are included, so budget for a scope and rings before heading to the range.
