Description
The Mossberg Patriot Walnut is a bolt-action hunting rifle built for shooters who want a capable, traditionally styled platform in a modern long-range cartridge without paying custom-shop prices. Chambered in 7mm PRC, it suits hunters and serious range shooters chasing performance at extended distances with heavier, high-BC projectiles.
The 1-in-8 twist rate is the detail that shapes your ammunition choices most directly. That rate stabilizes heavier 7mm bullets in the 160–175 grain range reliably, which is where the 7mm PRC does its most useful work at distance. Lighter loads in the 139–150 grain range will stabilize as well, giving the rifle some versatility, but the barrel is clearly optimized for the heavier end of the spectrum.
The barrel is both fluted and threaded, and the fluting here does two things: it removes material to reduce weight without shortening the sight radius or gas dwell time, and it adds surface area to help the barrel shed heat across a string of shots. The threading is cut at 5/8″-24 TPI, which is the standard pitch for this bore diameter and keeps suppressor and muzzle device options straightforward.
Mossberg’s LBA trigger is user-adjustable across a 2–7 pound pull range without requiring gunsmithing, which matters when the same rifle moves between a bench rest session and a cold-weather hunt where gloves change your feel entirely. The spiral-fluted bolt reduces contact surface against the receiver during cycling, which translates to a smoother, more consistent stroke under field conditions. The walnut stock and Matte Blue metalwork reflect a conventional aesthetic, but the underlying platform is built around a drop-box magazine and Weaver-style bases that keep practical utility front and center.
